Autobahn Performance Sponsors Dave Goodman’s 1979 Porsche 930 in the 2004 Tire Rack One Lap of America
Article provided by David Goodman and Keith Ibarguen.

Again this year we are proud to have Autobahn Performance as the prime sponsor for our entry in the 2004 Tire Rack One Lap of America – www.onelapofamerica.com . For the uninitiated, the One Lap of America is the modern version of the famed Cannonball Sea-to-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash; the flat out, no-holds-barred race from New York City to Redondo Beach, California immortalized in the movie “Cannonball Run”.

The event is an eight day (April 30 - May 8, 2004) cross country endurance road rally combined with time trials held at racetracks along the route. The road portion covers over 5,600 miles in one week while the track events add approximately 200 more miles. The One Lap is primarily an endurance event for both the car and the driver team.

With nearly twenty-four hours a day highway driving, combined with high speed road race track competition, the car must be in peak mechanical condition. Fatigue and a steady diet of convenience store food mixed with equal parts of caffiene and beef jerky take it’s toll on the driver team.

This year the One Lap will start at the Tire Rack Facility in South Bend Indiana, travel West to Topeka Kansas, then to Colorado Springs, Sonoma California, Las Vegas, Pueblo Colorado, Tulsa Oklahoma, Elkhart Lake Wisconsin and finally end back in South Bend. The longest leg is a grueling 1300 mile run from Colorado Springs to Sonoma.

Running through middle America, and in that close proximity to dozens of convenience store fuel stops it was only a matter of time before we saw Elvis. That time came on a late night run during the 2000 One Lap of America. Had we not taken pictures to prove it, we would not have believed it ourselves. He was driving a late model T-Bird, and eating a day old hot dog.

The Team

The One Lap drivers consist of car owner David Goodman and co-driver Keith Ibarguen. The One Lap team however consists of an extended group of family and friends. Most notably are Christine Ibarguen and Kelly Hough. Without their logistical and promotional support this activity would not be possible.

Many thanks to Autobahn Performance as well, who’s expert technical assistance has keep the car performing through 3 consecutive One Laps.

Dave takes on the dirt at Tulsa Speedway. Believe it or not the car was amazing on the dirt, and we took away a 13th overall in this event.

The Car

The car is a beautiful, stock 1979 Porsche 930 that has undergone extensive work to make it track worthy, safe and dependable. The 930 was chosen for its incredible heritage and performance characteristics. It is the turbocharged version of the Porsche 911, and was the fastest production car built in 1979.

The Goal

The Goodman/Ibarguen team has scored two podium finishes (2nd in 2002, 3rd in 2003) in the Vintage Foreign class in addition to 20th overall out of 89 entries in 2002. The goal for 2004 is finally bring home a first place in the Vintage Foreign class.

Beginning on April 29, Keith and I will be updating this web site with daily status from the road. Stay tuned ……
